Kranz became the school's first athlete to sign a professional football contract when he joined the Green Bay Packers in 1954 after a career at Milwaukee State Teachers College. He earned four letters in football; twice being named All-Conference and once captain. Kranz also captured three letters in track and the conference discus title in 1946. A brief stint with the Army Air Force, where he earned five battle stars and an air medal, interrupted his schooling.
