Peternell received two letters playing football at UWM. He was the leading tackler in 1972 after being named co-captain. He also received the team's Outstanding Senior Award and was nominated as Outstanding Collegiate Athlete of America. His career led to a tryout with the Chicago Fire in the World Football League. In 1973, he served as a UWM football coach.
