The Milwaukee Cheerleading Team enhances traditions of excellence, leadership and commitment to the school and the sport of cheerleading. Athletes cheer at both men's and women's basketball home games and select tournaments. The Milwaukee Cheerleading Team represents the University on and off campus at various events, promotes and supports Panther Athletics and generates crowd participation.
Our season begins in April with a spring tryout. A select number of athletes are taken onto the team at this point with a goal of receiving a bid to NCA College Nationals. During the summer there are three practice weekends to prepare the team for NCA College Camp. To ensure a strong team all cheerleaders are expected to be present at every practice and event. The remaining spots are filled at our fall tryout in early September. Our schedule in the fall increases to two or three three-hour practices each week, workouts and campus events. In November, basketball games for both men and women begin with an average of 1-2 games per week. We perform exhibitions at various local competitions in Wisconsin and Illinois on the weekends and attend NCA College Nationals in April.
Cheerleader Responsibilities
Practices
Summer practices are usually Friday nights, Saturdays, and Sundays held once in June and July and in the days leading up to camp in August. During the school year, practices are held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday evenings each week for three hours. Cheerleaders have access to Milwaukee Athletics' weight room.
Commitment
Outside of summer practices and camp, the cheerleading season lasts from September through mid-April. Games and practices occur throughout winter break and games, events, workouts and practices are mandatory for all team members. Cheerleading is a major personal commitment of your non-academic time and cannot be placed secondary to other non-academic activities (ex. clubs, sororities, fraternities, jobs, etc).
