INDIANAPOLIS – On Monday afternoon, the Horizon League announced its final edition of its 2024 weekly awards with Milwaukee pitcher
Gavin Theis selected as the Pitcher of the Week.
Â
Theis played a key role for the Panthers in their win on Friday afternoon as he pitched one over the minimum, keeping Youngstown State hitless over four innings of work. He earned his third win of the season as he helped hold the Penguins down as the Panthers scored three runs en route to the one-run victory.
Â
This season, Theis has thrown 31 1/3 innings with three starts and seven relief appearances. He has struck out 24 batters while holding opponents to a .243 batting average, with a 1.21 WHIP and a 6.03 ERA.
Â
All three of his wins have come in conference play this season with victories against Northern Kentucky (April 27), Purdue Fort Wayne (May 5), and Youngstown State (May 17).
Â
In three seasons with the Panthers, he has three starts in 28 career appearances with 36 strikeouts over 49 1/3 innings of work. He has a career ERA of 5.84, while holding opponents to a .254 batting average and allowing just 18 walks over that span.
Â
Theis becomes the second pitcher for Milwaukee to earn Horizon League Pitcher of the Week honors, as he joins
Luke Hansel on
April 16. He becomes the team's fifth selection this season to receive weekly honors as
Carson Hansen was named Batter of the Week on
April 23,
April 30, and
May 7.
Â
He becomes Milwaukee's first reliever to earn Pitcher of the Week accolades since
Nick Gilhaus earned the honor on
March 6, 2023.
Â
Milwaukee will begin postseason play on Wednesday morning, when the fourth-seeded Panthers will take on fifth-seeded Purdue Fort Wayne at 10:00 a.m. (CT) at Nischwitz Stadium in Dayton, Ohio.
