Panthers to compete Friday and Saturday in Iowa

MILWAUKEE – The Panthers men's and women's track and field teams will open the 2022 indoor season at the Hawkeye Invitational hosted by Iowa this weekend. Weight throw events are scheduled to take place at 5 p.m. on Friday evening with remaining events continuing Saturday at 11 a.m. inside the Iowa Recreation Building.

Scouting the Competition
Alongside Milwaukee and host school Iowa, nine other schools will be competing at the invite, including Arkansas State, Bradley, Loyola-Chicago, Northern Iowa, Western Illinois, and South Dakota.

Iowa opened its season in December at the Jimmy Grant Invitational, tallying strong results. The Hawkeyes posted 11 top-10 marks on the school's record list and broke several meet records.

Last Season Recap
The Panthers finished second at the Horizon League Indoor Championships a year ago and saw several strong performances. The teams combined for eight individual victories and 28 podium finishes across the four day.

Sam Conger and Michael Gorman earned short distance titles for Milwaukee in the 60-meter hurdles and 60-meter dash, respectively. Austin Wallace took home the top spot in the heptathlon.

Annie Guerrero in the high jump and Meg Swietlik in the 5000-meter race came through on the first day of the championships last year, placing first overall. Nadia Vo claimed the title in the long jump while Kyra Arendt earned her third consecutive triple jump title.

Cross Country Rewind
Milwaukee experienced a very successful cross country season, claiming its third Horizon League title in the past four years on the women's side while placing fourth on the men's side.

Mikayla Fox finished second overall to pace the women's team and was named to her fourth Horizon League First-Team All-League. Emily Burns also earned a spot on the First-Team list, taking sixth overall. Megan Safranski and Audrey Janik picked up Second-Team honors.

On the men's side, Corey Thornton led the way with a 12th-place finish, earning a nod to the Horizon League Second Team.
