EUGENE, Ore. – Ty Bauschelt competed at the USA Track & Field U20 Championships on Thursday afternoon, taking on a top-flight field in the 400m dash at Hayward Field.
Â
Bauschelt finished with a time of 48.13, getting off to an uneasy start before trying to play catch-up on the latter half of his heat.
Â
"The hardest part of athletics is having those days when we know execution of the plan could have been better," said head coach
Andrew Basler. "Ty's first 200m was off compared to where it had been all outdoor season. When that first 200m is off, it's hard to feel engaged with the race the final 200m."
Â
Bauschelt finished 23rd in a field of 27, failing to advance Friday's finals. The top 17 advanced, all posting times under 47.40, including Olympian and U18 indoor world record holder Quincy Wilson, who paced the field with a 45.28.
Â
"What we lacked in execution some days, we gained in learned experience," Basler added. "Ty was able to line up against 45-second guys, which he never faced throughout the season. He was able to compete in the same heat as Olympic Gold Medalist in [Quincy] Wilson and is walking away from this experience a better racer and feeling more motivated for next year."
