MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Six members of the Milwaukee track and field team were named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the outdoor season, announced by the league office on Wednesday morning.
The six student-athletes represented for the outdoor season is tied for most by any school in the Horizon League.
Lauren Lietzke and
Megan Safranski earned the honor on the women's side while
Tony Bretall,
Luke Rapisarda,
Michael Sippy, and
Trevor Wenzel were all named on the men's side.
To be eligible for the Horizon League All-Academic team, student-athletes must participate in 50 percent of the team's overall games, completed one year at the school, and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
Safranski capped her third outdoor season on a high note, finishing runner-up in the 1,500-meter race at the Horizon League Championships. Her time of 4:33.65 sits fourth all-time in program history. She owns a 3.990 GPA in her work toward a degree in human resources, finance, and marketing.
Lietzke put together another inpressive season culminating with three top-10 finishes at the Horizon League Championships. She finished third in shot put (14.01m), fourth in discus (43.80m), and seventh in hammer throw (45.28m). The junior is working toward her degree in biomedical engineering and holds a 3.925 cumulative GPA.
In his first outdoor season for Milwaukee, Bretall took home a runner-up finish in the decathlon at the Horizon League Championships and also placed fifth in the pole vault. Bretall is working toward his degree in music education and holds a 3.834 GPA.
Rapisarda collected his second all-academic nod behind a 4.0 GPA in finance. On the track, his year was highlighted by a personal-best time of 11.36 in the 100-meter at the Big Blue Classic. Rapisarda also placed 10th in the 400-meter race at the Horizon League Championships.
Behind a 3.777 GPA in his work toward Information Science Technology, Sippy earned his fourth all-academic honor. The senior won two races throughout the season and also reached the podium in the 800-meter race at the Horizon League Championships, placing third.
Wenzel finished the season strong, posting career-best times in the 5,000-meter race and 1,500-meter race the two weeks prior to the championships. He then claimed a third-place finish in the 1,500-meter event at the Horizon League Championships. The junior is working toward his degree in Mechanical Engineering and holds a 3.904 GPA.
