MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Sam Conger and
Ashley Melvin of the Milwaukee men's and women's track and field team were named the Horizon League Runner and Field Athlete of the week, the league office announced Tuesday.
This marks the first-career honor for
Sam Conger while it is the fifth-career honor for
Ashley Melvin and her third recognition just this season.
Sam Conger was recognized this week after a breakthrough performance in the 60m hurdles at the GVSU Big Meet. The sophomore advanced to finals after finishing eighth with a time of 8.22. A few hours later, he got in front of the hurdles one more time for finals and picked up a new personal record time of 8.11 for a seventh-place finish in finals. His time moved him up to eighth in program history and is now tied for third in the league.
The Batavia, Ill. native also led off the 4x400m relay that finished second with a time of 3:23.42.
Ashley Melvin was recognized yet again as the field athlete of the week after re-setting her high jump school record for the fourth time this season at the GVSU Big Meet. The senior won the event at the Big Meet by over five inches with a new height of 1.78m (5-10) to top her previous record of 1.77m from a few weeks ago. The Hartford, Wis. native even had good looks at 1.82m, which would punch her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Melvin continues to lead the league in the event.
Milwaukee returns home Saturday, Feb. 22, for the annual Panther Tune-Up meet. Come watch the Panthers compete in their final home meet of the season before heading off to the 2020 Horizon League Indoor Championships at Youngstown State on Feb. 29 – Mar. 1.
