ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Milwaukee men's track & field squad competed in the second day of the Horizon League Outdoor Championships hosted by Oakland at Elaine Leigh Track & Field Complex Saturday.
With one day of competition remaining, the Panthers currently rank third with 36 points, trailing only Youngstown St. (94 points) and Purdue Fort Wayne (48 points).
"The team showed a lot of resiliency today in some windy conditions," said head coach
Andrew Basler. "We had a 90-minute weather delay, but I thought our team was mentally prepared to not let it derail their focus."
Three athletes will represent Milwaukee in the 400-meter run finals tomorrow, with
Ty Bauschelt entering the race as the favorite. He won the prelims with a time of 47.82.
Anthony Buford and
Zac Schmidt also will compete in the finals, running prelim times of 49.32 (fifth) and 50.63 (sixth), respectively.
Bauschelt will also compete in the 200-meter finals Sunday after crossing the line second in the prelims. The freshman recorded a time of 22.00 in the event.
Securing a spot in the 110-meter hurdle finals was
Brendan Vlasak who ran a personal-best time of 14.56 to finish sixth. Also clocking a personal-best time in the event was
Ethan Criter (15.80).
Criter crossed the line eighth in the 400-meter hurdles, turning in a finals-qualifying time of 57.53.
At the end of the decathlon,
Trent Oiler finished fifth with 5569 points. His top mark from Saturday's events was a runner-up finish in the 1500-meter run, where he registered a time of 5:02.50. He placed fifth in the discus (29.98 meters), seventh in the 110-meter hurdles (17.59), ninth in the javelin (30.08 meters), and 10th in the pole vault (2.80 meters).
Trevor Boyer also wrapped up his decathlon appearance, finishing the event eighth with 5255 points. His standout performances of the day came in the pole vault where he finished second (4.20 meters) and the 110-meter hurdles where he ended third (15.83).
Sam Schreiber secured fourth place in the 3000-meter steeplechase, turning in a time of 9:14.85.
In the long jump, Buford came away with runner-up honors after jumping 7.14 meters.
Tim Maidment also cracked the top five, clearing a personal-best 6.86 meters to earn fifth place.
Kyril Griffin also competed in the event, jumping 6.69 meters.
Mason Weaver will compete in the 100-meter dash finals after an eighth-place prelim performance. He clocked a time of 11.16.
Wade Duffek and
Karsten Grundahl both competed in the 800-meter run, finishing in eighth (1:54.78) and ninth (1:55.25), respectively.
In the shot put,
Aiden Janke took home sixth place after his 14.89-meter throw.
"As we head into Championship Sunday, both the men and women are fighting for hardware," added Basler. "We got a lot of Panthers through to the finals in the running events, which is what you need to put points on the board on Sunday. I'm excited to watch this group leave it all out there."
