Women's Track & Field Closes Impressive First Weekend of Outdoor Competition

NORMAL, Ill.- The Milwaukee women's track & field team was in action for the final day of competition at the Raleigh Relays and Redbird Challenge. Cailin Kinas took home the title in the 3000m steeplechase at the Redbird Challenge to lead the way for the Panthers.
 
REDBIRD CHALLENGE
 
Kinas used a time of 11:10.35 to take the top spot in her first action of her outdoor campaign. Sara Jochims followed Kinas in the event, taking second after notching the ninth-best time in program history at 11:34.81.
 
As a team Milwaukee finished fourth out of the 14 teams in the event with 86 points. In addition to the one individual victory, the group also received top-three finishes from eight athletes.
 
Victoria Evtimov had a strong day for the Panthers, taking third in the 200m dash after crossing the finish line in 24.92. Evtimov added fourth-place showing in the 100m dash, finishing in 12.17.
 
"Despite some wet and cooler conditions, we got a lot of strong performances," said head coach Andrew Basler. "Victoria was able to have two great races in the 100m and 200m dashes"
 
Angelica Refinski also qualified for the 100m dash finals, chipping in a time of 12.50 to land in eighth place.
 
In the discus, Mercedes Herrera tacked on another top-three finish, using a toss of 40.69m to grab third place in the event.
 
Keeping up the theme, Leah Handshoe managed third in the 400m hurdles, making her way around the track in 1:05.59.
 
Hallie Hoger kept it going in the 5000m run, coming in at 18:31.25 to land in the third spot. Anna Gallagher was next to finish the race at 18:49.95 for fourth place.
 
Milwaukee was able to secure two more top-three finishes from their relay teams on the day. The 4x400 squad of Alexandria Simmons, Taylor Thimmesch, Leah Handshoe, and Brooke Crosby came in second, putting together a time of 4:01.92.
 
In the 4x100, Lilly Wepking, Kalea Weyenberg, Isabel Roloff, and Angelica Refinski strode into third place, clocking a time of 49.27.
 
RALEIGH RELAYS
 
Leading the way in the long jump was Anna Szepieniec who took ninth with a leap of 5.70m. Morgan Pilate joined Szepieniec in the event, reaching a distance of 5.39m.
 
"Day two was another strong day for the group in Raleigh," Basler continued. "Anna made the finals in a tough long jump field to produce a good opening mark."
 
Katie Burns closed things out on the track for the Panthers, posting a time of 25.04 in the 200m dash.

Milwaukee will back next weekend, when they travel to compete in the Ashton May Invite Hosted by La Crosse on Apr. 5 at 12:00 p.m.
