INDIANAPOLIS – On Monday, the Horizon League announced the members of the 2023 Outdoor Track & Field All-Academic Teams with 12 members of the Milwaukee track & field team earning honors for their success in the classroom coupled with their success in their respective events.

Milwaukee had six recognized as members of the Women's All-Academic Team as
Cynthia Hernandez,
Lauren Lietzke,
Meg Swietlik,
Dominique Thomas,
Kortnie Volk, and
Tabitha Wechlo all earned recognition.
Annie Guerrero was also awarded a spot on the Honorable Mention Team.

The men's track & field team had five honorees for their efforts this spring, including
Tony Bretall,
Caleb Henry,
EJ Kruse,
Jack Misky, and
Trevor Wenzel.

The women's team led all Horizon League programs with six selections, including five members on the All-Academic Team. Meanwhile the men's program had all five selections on the All-Academic Team, and trailed just Purdue Fort Wayne, who had six honorees with two of those coming as Honorable Mention selections.

Hernandez earns her second All-Academic nod after earning the distinction during the indoor season. She helped Milwaukee to a second-place finish at the Horizon League Outdoor Track & Field Championships with seven team points including a fourth-place finish in the discus and a seventh-place finish in the hammer. She had five top-10 finishes this spring including three in the hammer and a pair in discus. Hernandez entered the spring season with a 4.00 GPA.

Lietzke makes it a sweep for her the last three years as a member of the All-Academic team, earning the honor during the indoor and outdoor seasons in 2021, 2022, and now 2023. This spring she earned 20 team points for the Panthers at the Horizon Championships by winning the title in the discus at 45.30 meters, while also taking fourth in both hammer and shot put. She ended the spring with 10 top-10 finishes this spring with four of those coming in the discus. Lietzke ended the fall 2022 semester with a 3.59 GPA.

Swietlik earns another academic nod to her career ledger, after helping the team with six points at the Horizon Championships in distance events. Swietlik was fourth in the 10,000m run and was eighth in the 5,000m run. This spring she set the seventh-best mark in the 10,000 and the eighth-best mark in program history in the 5,000. She had three top-10 finishes this spring including her pair at the championships. Swietlik had a 3.86 GPA entering the spring.

Thomas earns her second All-Academic Team selection this academic year after being honored following the indoor campaign. Thomas was second in the 100m dash at the Horizon League Championships and fourth in both the 200m dash and the 4x100m relay to give the team 18 points. She broke into the top-four all-time in program history in all three of her events, and earned six top-five finishes this spring including three in the 100m dash. Thomas entered the spring semester with a 3.87 cumulative GPA.

Volk notches her second consecutive outdoor All-Academic Team honor, following last spring's selection. She finished third at the Horizon Championships in the heptathlon with 4606 points and was also fifth in long jump for 10 team points. This spring she had the sixth-best mark in program history in the heptathlon, while earning 13 top-10 finishes including three each in the javelin and the long jump, and two each in the heptathlon and the shot put. Volk went into the spring term with a 4.00 cumulative GPA.

Wechlo earns another academic honor from the Horizon League after being an All-Academic Team member in the outdoor season in 2022, and indoor season in 2023. This spring she was the Horizon League Champion in the shot put at 14.49 meters and was also eighth in the discus to register 11 points for the Panthers. She had eight top-10 finishes during the spring season with five of those coming in the shot put, and another pair in the discus. Wechlo held a 3.89 GPA entering the spring semester.

Guerrero, whose career just wrapped up at the NCAA West Preliminaries, was an All-Academic Team member in each of the past two indoor seasons as well as the outdoor season in 2022. She finished third this year in the high jump at the Horizon League Championships for six team points, while earlier in the spring tied for her own program record in the event at 1.75 meters. She had three wins and five top-six finishes in the high jump this spring. Guerrero owned a 3.70 GPA heading into the spring term.

Bretall earns his third-straight outdoor All-Academic Team honor to go along with two indoor track & field nods. Bretall was among the Milwaukee leaders with 12 team points at the Horizon League Championships with a second-place finish in the decathlon, and a fifth-place finish in the javelin. This spring he had eight finishes in the top-10 including four in the javelin, and a pair of top-10 finishes in discus. Bretall's cumulative GPA was 3.78 entering the spring 2023 term.

Henry is back on the All-Academic Team for the second time this year, and third time in his career. This spring he was the top finisher at the Horizon League Championships in the 400m dash and helped the team to a third-place mark in the 4x400m relay, helping the team to 16 team points. During the season he set the fifth-best mark in the 400m dash in program history and had nine top-10 finishes including four each in the 400m and the 4x400m relay. Henry had a 3.69 GPA entering the spring.

Kruse earns his first career honor from the Horizon League, after an impressive showing this spring campaign. He helped the team to a second-place finish in the 4x100m relay, while also finishing fourth in the 100m dash. Earlier in the spring he set the 10th-best mark in program history in the 100m dash at 10.75, while also earning four top-five finishes during the season, including once in both the 100m dash at the Horizon Championships, and one in the 400m run. Kruse owned a 3.75 GPA prior to the start of the spring semester.

Misky also makes his debut on the All-Academic Team for the Horizon League following a strong spring season that culminated in nine team points for the Panthers at the league championships. He finished third in the decathlon with 5776 points, while also taking seventh place in the discus and an eight-place finish in the javelin. This spring he had nine top-10 finishes, with four of those coming in the discus and another two in the javelin. Misky was at a 3.84 cumulative GPA prior to the spring 2023 semester.

Wenzel wraps up his decorated career with yet another outdoor track & field all-academic honor to go along with his pair of awards during the indoor seasons. Wenzel had top-three finishes in both the 10,000m and the 5,000m runs at the Horizon League Championships, with his mark in the 10,000m run becoming the new standard in Milwaukee history. He also set the 5000m run record earlier in the spring and put up the fourth-best time in the 1500m run. He had two wins this spring in the 1500m run and had five top-10 finishes overall this season including two each in the 1500m and 5000m events. Wenzel entered the spring term with a 3.79 cumulative GPA.
