Five Panthers Earn Horizon All-Academic Honors On Men's Track

Milwaukee totals most in conference

MILWAUKEE – Four members of the Milwaukee men's track and field team have been named to the Horizon League All-Academic Team for the outdoor season along with an Honorable Mention, the league office announced Thursday.
 
The nine student-athletes represented for the outdoor season between the men's and women's teams is the most from any school in the Horizon League. Tony Bretall, Josh Freitag, Luke Rapisarda, and Trevor Wenzel were recognized on the men's team along with Gracien Jules, who was named as an Honorable Mention.
 
To be eligible for the Horizon League All-Academic team, student-athletes must participate in 50 percent of the team's overall games, have completed one year at the school, and have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 on a 4.0 scale.
 
Bretall was recognized for the fourth time and carries a 3.755 GPA in the classroom. The junior finished runner-up at the Horizon League Championships in the decathlon, totaling 6133 points. Bretall won the decathlon high jump and javelin and finished second in the decathlon 110-meter hurdles, pole vault, and discus. He also placed 10th in the javelin at the league meet.
 
Freitag, who holds a 3.991 GPA as a criminal justice major, was named to the All-Academic team for the third time in his career. The senior placed third in the 5000 meter at the Valparaiso Open with a time of 16:30.07 and was fifth in the 1500 meter at the Warrior Invite.
 
Rapisarda holds a 4.00 GPA as a finance major and has been named to the All-Academic four times during his career. The senior placed seventh in the 400 meter at the Horizon League Championships, running a 50.33. Rapisarda was part of a pair of relay teams at the league conference meet, helping Milwaukee record a pair of top-four finishes. He placed second at the Valparaiso Open in the 400 meter, crossing the line at 50.77.
 
Wenzel collects his sixth All-Academic team award between cross country and track and field. The senior holds a 3.868 GPA as an engineering major and placed third at the conference meet in the 5000 meter at 14:45.83. Wenzel set the school record in the event early in the season at the Raleigh Relays, running a 14:28.02.
 
Jules was named to the Honorable Mention team with a 3.533 GPA as a nutritional sciences major. The junior scored in three events at the Horizon League Championships, placing fourth in the shot put and hammer throw and fifth in the discus. He moved up to third in program history in the shot put at 17.13 meters and fourth in the discus at 53.21 meters.
