Box Score CHARLESTON, Ill. – After a rough outing Saturday, the Milwaukee tennis team rebounded Sunday afternoon defeating Eastern Illinois 4-3 from the Danville Tennis Center in Illinois.
Milwaukee's (2-2)
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova won at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, but came up short in the other two matches to drop the doubles point. However, it was in singles where the Panthers excelled and won the match over the Eastern Illinois (0-6) Panthers.
"Really proud of how the team came together to get the win today," said Panther head coach
Jason Potthoff. "We were all pretty disappointed after yesterday's match because we played a great doubles point but didn't take advantage of some opportunities at crucial moments in singles. Today the roles were reversed and we didn't close out the doubles when we had the chance, but no one panicked and we put together four really solid singles wins. I know the team is fired up to get back out on the court against some strong teams next weekend, and it feels good to be walking out of today's match with a win and some momentum."
The EIU Panthers took an early 2-0 lead after winning the doubles point and first singles match, but Milwaukee stormed back winning the next three matches to shift the momentum.
Seniors
Mayya Perova,
Nikki Milner and
Anika Tylek led the comeback for the Black & Gold.
Anika Tylek dropped just one game, sweeping her opponent 6-0, 6-1, while Perova also won in straight sets, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1. Milner gave Milwaukee the edge after winning 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 over Addison Brown.
Freshman
Avery Durham earned her first collegiate singles victory and her win (6-2, 6-0) over Kaitlyn Snyder clinched the match for Milwaukee.
Up next, the Panthers return home next weekend as the team hosts Eastern Illinois and cross-town rival Marquette.
