KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Mayya Perova,
Anika Tylek and
Avery Durham of the Milwaukee Tennis team picked up singles wins, but the Panthers came up short, 4-3 to Western Michigan Sunday morning from the West Hills Athletic Club.
The doubles point in the Panthers (3-5) vs Broncos (6-4) dual was the difference maker in the match. Milwaukee earned three wins at singles, but fell on the short end of a 4-3 loss to WMU.
"We got off to a great start in doubles, with Greta [Carbone] and Iva [Stejskalova] playing a nearly perfect set, and Avery [Durham] and Babs [Burgersdijk] having a chance to get off quickly that we just didn't capitalize on," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "When you're playing a team as good as Western Michigan you have to convert on every opportunity you possibly can, and we just didn't do quite enough today. We competed hard in singles, and Mayya and Avery did an amazing job closing out their matches, so there's a lot to be positive about heading into next weekend.
MKE's
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova bounced back after Saturday loss, dropping just one game, 6-1, over WMU's Femke Tjon-A-Joe and Kristina Tiraspolsky.
In singles, freshman
Avery Durham earned another win from the No. 6 line, dropping just two games in a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Taylor Smith.
Senior
Mayya Perova extended her win streak to five, with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Ana Guadiana. With the win, Perova improves to 7-1 overall.
After a hard fought first set,
Anika Tylek rallied back to win the second set 6-1 and force a third set tiebreaker. The Ottawa native collected the W after Bronco's Kaitlyn Rogosch retired.
Next weekend, the Panthers are scheduled to take on the North Dakota Fighting Hawks on February 26. First serve is set for 11:30 a.m. (CT).
