MADISON, Wis. – Austin Wallace set a new school record in the long jump as the Milwaukee men's track and field team competed at the St. Valentine's Invite on Friday evening.
Wallace broke his own school record in the long jump, leaping to a mark of 7.53m. He surpassed his distance of 7.52m which he set earlier this season.
In the other field events,
Anthony Campbell tallied a first-place finish in the high jump with a jump of 1.98m.
Evan Bartelsen recorded a season-best in the pole vault, placing fourth at 4.73m.
Will Mortimer also posted a season-best in the triple jump, with a jump of 13.48m.
"Today was a tune-up meet as we head into conference championships and things went really well for us," Head coach
Andrew Basler said. "We went in hoping to increase our performances, and that happened in some key events for us.
Austin Wallace had a good meet. Broke his school record again by a little bit, but he had some big fouls in the long jump, so we know there's more there which is pretty exciting."
Sam Conger won the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.00 seconds.
Dane Nelson placed fourth in the event, racing to a time of 8.19 seconds.
"Our hurdle crew did extremely well," Basler said. "Conger continues to show that he's the one to beat in conference.
Dane Nelson had a great day with a pair of lifetime bests, first in the prelims and then in the finals so that was good to see."
Milwaukee had a strong showing the 200m, led by a first-place finish from
Michael Gorman (22.47).
Chandler Ellis (23.00) and
Caleb Anderson (23.01) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
Golden Cotton placed first in the 60m, with a time of 6.94 seconds.
In the 3000m run,
Aidan Sodemann and
Corey Thornton kept a close pace, with Sodemann finishing third at 8:47.72. Thornton crossed the line just behind at 8:47.87.
The throws team had a solid performance at the meet, with
Caleb Rogalski tallying an eighth-place finish in the shot put at 16.82m.
Gracien Jules finished ninth in the event with a throw of 16.56m and placed seventh in the weight throw at 17.20m.
Milwaukee heads to the Horizon League Championships next weekend hosted by Youngstown State. The two-day meet begins next Saturday, February 26 at 8 a.m. and concludes Sunday, February 27.
"All in all, we have a pretty good idea of our travel squad," Basler said. "We fell the group that we're going to be taking to Youngstown State in going to compete for a championship. Really excited with where we are right now."
