Box Score 2 WHITEWATER, Wis. – Anika Tylek and
Alice Shields of the Milwaukee tennis team led the Panthers with first place finishes at the Warhawk Tennis Fall Invitational this weekend.
In just their second tournament this fall, the Panthers found success early and often. Senior
Anika Tylek clinched the No. 2 Singles Draw, while freshman
Alice Shields cruised to the top of the podium in the No. 3 Singles Draw.
"This weekend was a breakthrough for our team," said head coach
Ryan Kucera. "Starting with our results, we had a fantastic showing. Every single athlete that was able to compete ended the tournament with a winning record, and on championship day in singles we finished with a 10-2 record. Huge congratulations to our two flight champions, Anika and Alice. They each played some incredibly smart and crafty tennis."
Tylek tallied a straight-set 7-5, 6-4 over conference foe Cleveland State to kick off the invite, and followed up with a win over NIU's McKenna Chudy (Northern Illinois), 7-6 (6),6-1. In the Championship match, Tylek rallied after a 2-6 first set loss, to defeat Whitewater's Cassie Lee 6-2, 10-3.
After winning her first match 7-6 (11), 6-0 and second 3-6, 7-5, 10-3, MKE's Shields dropped just two games in the No. 3 Singles Draw Championship match, winning 6-1, 6-1 over NIU's Jenna Home.
The Panthers also earned second place finishes in singles play in junior
Iva Stejskalova (No. 1 Singles Draw),
Giorgia Cavestro (No. 4 Singles Draw). In doubles,
Iva Stejskalova and
Nadiia Konieva teamed up for a second place finish from the No. 1 doubles line, while Tylek and Cavestro took second from the No. 2 doubles line.
"More importantly than our results, we showed incredible levels of resiliency," added Kucera. "Our level of positivity and believe in the tough moments really set us apart. We have a long way to go, but if the team can hold onto the mindset we shared this weekend, great things are ahead for us!"
Up next, the Panthers will have a couple weeks to prepare for the Bulldog Hidden Duals hosted by Drake. The three-day tournament will run from Oct. 28 – Oct. 30.
