MILWAUKEE – Freshman
Giorgia Cavestro earned her first collegiate singles victory and helped the Milwaukee Tennis team to a dominating 6-1 victory over Cardinal Stritch Saturday afternoon from Elite – North Shore in Milwaukee.
"I'm very proud of how the team competed today," said Panther head coach
Jason Potthoff. "Cardinal Stritch is always fired up to play us and they have some talented new players so it was definitely a battle out there. We are a little banged up so it will be good to get some rest and recovery heading into what will be a tough weekend on the road."
Milwaukee (1-1) got off to a great start, dropping just five games between the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles lines. Sophomore tandem,
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova finished first with a 6-3 win, while
Mayya Perova and
Nikki Milner earned a 6-2 victory to capture the doubles point. Freshmen duo
Avery Durham and
Giorgia Cavestro's match went unfinished, but were leading 5-2 before Perova and Milner wrapped up the point for the Panthers.
In singles, the Black & Gold dominated, winning three-straight singles matches to secure the match.
Cavestro controlled the match from start to finish from the No. 6 singles line. She won 6-2, 6-1 over Wolves Marta Garcia for her first singles victory for the Black & Gold.
Mayya Perova won handedly from the No. 1 singles line, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-1 over Kissmel Cedano.
Iva Stejskalova and
Anika Tylek also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-2 over their opponents.
Senior
Nikki Milner picked up the sixth match win for Milwaukee, coming back to win in the tie-breaker, 6-1, 6-7(2), 10-7.
Up next, the Panthers will travel south of the border to take Butler and Eastern Illinois the weekend of February 5
th.
