MILWAUKEE, Wis. – In a full team effort, the Milwaukee tennis team defeated Horizon League foe, Cleveland State Saturday afternoon, 4-3, from River Glen Elite.
Saturday's matchup marked the second-to-last regular season match for the Panthers, and also serves as an important series for the Black & Gold to obtain a spot into the Horizon League Tournament. With the win, Milwaukee improves to 13-7, 6-5 while Cleveland State drops to 8-10, 6-5.
"That was an amazing college tennis match, and the credit goes to all eight ladies on the team," said Panther head coach
Jason Potthoff. "Each one of them played a part in getting us to four points today against a very good Cleveland State team. We'll need every bit of that fight again tomorrow, and I know everyone is hungry to go out and compete like crazy and leave everything we've got on the court."
The Panthers came out on top in doubles to get the match started. The point proved critical with both teams winning three matches each in singles play. Senior duo
Anna Daniel Fuentes and
Agata Jurczak were the first to finish, allowing just one game in a 6-1 victory over CSU's Beth Yauch and Gaby Schoenberg. The Vikings evened the match with a win from the No. 2 line, but reigning Horizon League Doubles Team of the Week,
Greta Carbone and
Nikki Milner won 7-6 (5) from the No. 1 doubles line over Miruna Vasilescu and Klara Mrcela and give the Panthers an early one point margin.
Nikki Milner was the first victor for the Panthers in singles after locking in straight-sets wins from the No. 4 line 6-3, 6-2.
Junior
Anika Tylek followed suit with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Selma Tounsi and a 3-1 edge to the Black & Gold.
Agata Jurczak followed with a 6-4, 6-4 triumph and scored the match-clinching point for Milwaukee.
The Panthers and Vikings will wrap up the regular season Sunday at River Glen Elite. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
