Carbone Racks Up Another Win for the Panthers
Â
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Freshman standout
Greta Carbone picked up her team leading 13
th singles victory Sunday afternoon, but the Milwaukee tennis team couldn't overcome UIC, falling 6-1 from River Glen Elite.
Â
Milwaukee (10-7, 3-5) battled in today's match, but the team was unable to overcome the now first place UIC Flames (15-5, 7-1).
Â
"The team showed a lot of heart and character in fighting through some difficult situations today," said Panther head coach
Jason Potthoff. "It's been a tough stretch of matches for us but this adversity makes us stronger and we'll be ready to go battle again next weekend."
Â
UIC got a jump on the Panthers by taking the first doubles match from the No. 2 doubles line. MKE's
Mayya Perova and
Anika Tylek were up 4-3 from the No. 3 line, but the match ended unfinished when UIC clinched the point when Carbone and
Nikki Milner fell 6-2 to Tamara Malazonia and Agnes Gustafsson.
Â
Greta Carbone is certainly making her case for league's freshman of the year, earning her fifth-straight victory and improve to 13-3, 7-1. For the second straight day, Carbone defeated UIC's Tamara Malazonia, 5-7, 6-2, 10-3, for the lone Panther point.
Â
Just four matches remain and the Panthers will have a little bit of work to do this year as the Horizon League is taking just the top four teams to the tournament. MKE sits in fifth place after this weekend's matches, and will take on Oakland and Cleveland State to finish the regular season.
Â
The Panthers will travel to the Golden Grizzlies next weekend, with the first match beginning April 17 at 12 p.m. (CT) from the Bloomfield Tennis & Fitness center.
