YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Greta Carbone tallied a singles win for the Milwaukee Tennis team, but the Panthers fell to Youngstown State, 6-1, Sunday afternoon from the YSU Indoor Tennis Center.
Coming up short Saturday against the Penguins (9-7, 2-0), Milwaukee (7-4, 0-2) looked to even the series, but got off to a slow start and were unable to overcome the five-time league champions.
"We played our worst doubles point of the season, and unfortunately, we never got things going in singles," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "The effort was there, but the execution was not, and it shows on the scoreboard. The bye weekend comes at a good time for us, so we need to get in some rest and recovery and sharpen some things up before our next matches."
For the first time in nine matches, Milwaukee lost the doubles point to begin the match. Freshman duo
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova were tied at 4-4, when YSU's Claudia Barboz and Jessica Stanmore defeated
Anna Daniel Fuentes and
Agata Jurczak, 6-4, from the No. 3 line and clinch the point.
Carbone finished 2-0 from the No. 1 line against the Penguins, picking up a 7-6, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) victory over Tamara Teufl on day two of the series. With the win, Carbone improves to 8-2, 2-0 on the season.
Milwaukee heads into a buy weekend and will resume conference play on the road against Northern Kentucky. MKE and the Norse will battle it out March 7-28 beginning at 11 a.m. CT.
