MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team return to action this weekend against cross-town rival Marquette. The dual is set for Saturday, February 6 at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium at 12 p.m.
Last Time Out: MKE dominated Cardinal Stritch, 6-1, to open the 2021 season. Freshmen duo
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova won their first collegiate doubles match, 6-4. Carbone and Stejskalova served as the Panthers No. 1 doubles team and defeated Wolves' Lisa Keller and Klara Smolikova to clinch the doubles point for the Black & Gold.
About the Golden Eagles: Marquette opened the season against fellow Horizon League foe, UIC and edged out the Flames, 4-3.
Marquette's roster consists of six freshmen, two sophomores and one junior. Natalija Popovic garners the most experience for the Golden Eagles, finishing 11-3 primarily from the No. 3 singles line a season ago.
Potthoff at the Helm: Jason Potthoff enters his fourth season with the Panthers. During his time with MKE, he has amassed 27 victories, including a six match improvement following the year he arrived. In 2018, he led the Panthers back to the Horizon League Tournament after a two year absence.
Seniors Lead the Way: Anna Daniel Fuentes returns to the Black & Gold with the NCAA granting 2020 spring student-athletes eligibility due to the pandemic. Fuentes ended 2020 with an 8-5 record from the No. 4 singles line, and played a pivotal role in the teams doubles lineup. Teamed up with fellow senior
Agata Jurczak, the duo finished 8-3 together, helping the team to a combined 28-7 doubles record.
Lucy Harper also returns to the lineup with notable experience in both singles and doubles.
Fan Update: The Horizon League Board of Directors has decided, as a part of its role of overseeing League-wide safety protocols focused on consistency and clarity for all League competition, that all indoor league sports this year will be played without fans. This policy extends to team pass lists, complimentary tickets and band/spirit squads.
Milwaukee Athletics remains committed to ensuring the health, safety and well-being of our student-athletes, our staff and the campus and the community. All decisions will be made with the guidance provided by county, state, campus and Horizon League officials. In addition, all game dates and times are subject to change based on current protocols.
