MILWAUKEE, Wis. – For their second-straight sweep, the Milwaukee tennis team swept UW-Whitewater, 7-0 Sunday afternoon from River Glen Elite.
The Panthers maintained yesterday's momentum and confidence over Northern Iowa and turned Sunday's match against the Warhawks into another 7-0 sweep. With the win, the team moves to 3-1 on the season.
"I'm really pleased with how everyone competed today," said Panther head coach
Jason Potthoff. "Each match we are getting a little tougher and a little more confident, and that's all I can ask for at this point in the season."
In doubles, the Black & Gold dropped just six games in three matches.
Mayya Perova and
Nikki Milner got off the courts first with a 6-0 win over Molly Rueth and Kellie Ha, while freshmen duo
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova defeated Olivia Kraft and Sabrina Palavra, 6-2. The Panthers cleaned up doubles competition with a 6-4 victory from
Anna Daniel Fuentes and
Agata Jurczak.
With a 6-2, 6-2 win over Kasey Schlicht from the No. 1 singles line, freshman
Greta Carbone remains unbeaten and improves to 4-0 and 3-0 from the No. 1 line so far this year.
Senior
Anna Daniel Fuentes also garners a 4-0 singles record after defeating Sabrina Palavra, 6-2, 7-6(3).
"I want to highlight Anna's performances in singles the last two days, as she took on both teams' most physical players and come up with the big points when she needed them," Potthoff said. "Whitewater is always a tough opponent and I think we did a good job handling their variety today, but I know they'll regroup and be ready to battle again in a few weeks."
Lucy Harper allowed just two games to improve to a 2-0 singles record after defeating Kellie Ha, 6-2, 6-0.
Originally, MKE was scheduled to play Chicago State, but a cancellation on Chicago States behalf sees the Panthers and Warhawks faceoff twice this 2021 season.
Next up, Milwaukee hits the road with a trip to Valparaiso on Friday, February 19. First serve is set for 5:30 p.m. at The Courts of NWI in Valparaiso, Ind.
