MILWAUKEE, Wis. – In a Panthers vs Panthers showdown, it was the Milwaukee Panther tennis team that came out on top, 7-0 over Northern Iowa Saturday afternoon from River Glen Elite.
Milwaukee earned the first point by sweeping all three matches in doubles play. MKE's
Anna Daniel Fuentes and
Agata Jurczak finished first, giving up just one game, to win 6-1 over Thassia Moreira and Valentina Caro. Duo
Mayya Perova and
Nikki Milner finished shortly after with an identical score. From the No. 1 doubles line, freshmen tandem
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova found themselves in a hole early on, down 2-5, but rallied five-straight games for the comeback win, 7-5.
"Today was just what I was looking for, a clean and comprehensive performance from the whole team," said Panther head coach
Jason Potthoff. "Lines 2 and 3 doubles were solid from start to finish, and them getting off the court quickly allowed us to build some momentum. After going down 2-5 at line 1, Greta and Iva really focused in and reeled off five-straight games, which shows just how explosive they can be when they are on their game. The doubles definitely set the tone for the day and there were some great individual efforts out there in singles."
In singles, all six panthers won in straight sets for a clean sweep over UNI. Junior
Mayya Perova gave up just three games for a complete win at the No. 2 line over UNI's Harri Proudfoot, 6-2, 6-1.
"Mayya really looked sharp today and I'm happy to see her starting to find her rhythm," said Potthoff.
MKE's
Nikki Milner also defeated her opponent 6-2, 6-1, while Stejskalova won shortly after Milner at 6-2, 6-2.
Agata Jurczak picked up her first singles win this season with a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Olivia Fain, while senior Daniel Fuentes and Carbone both picked up their third singles victory on the year.
"I'm excited to see how we build on today's performance and roll some of that momentum into tomorrow's match," said Potthoff.
Next up, Milwaukee will have a Sunday matinee against UW-Whitewater at home from River Glen Elite. First serve against the Warhawks is set for 1 p.m.
