Tennis Dominate Wolves in Season Opener, 6-1
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team opened the 2021 season with a 6-1 victory over Cardinal Stritch Saturday afternoon from River Glen Elite.
From start to finish, the Panthers controlled the match against the Wolves. The Black & Gold earned the doubles point to begin the match, then won the next five single matches to earn the victory.
"I'm really pleased with how the team competed today," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "It's been almost 11 months since we've been across the net from anyone other than our teammates and I know the girls were just ready to get on the court and battle."
Freshmen
Greta Carbone and
Iva Stejskalova were paired together as the Panthers No. 1 doubles team, and earned their first collegiate doubles win over Wolves' Lisa Keller and Klara Smolikova by a score of 6-4.
Meanwhile,
Anna Daniel Fuentes and
Agata Jurczak won 6-3 from the No. 2 line, and junior duo
Mayya Perova and
Nikki Milner replicated a 6-3 win to sweep doubles.
"I'm really excited for Greta and Iva to get their first collegiate wins, and our veteran players were very steady out there, Potthoff said. "Our best tennis is still farther down the road, but today was just what we needed to start the season."
In singles, Milwaukee took five-of-six matches to take the match in complete domination. In addition to their doubles win, Carbone and Stejskalova also won their first collegiate singles matches, winning 6-3, 6-2 and 6-4, 6-3.
