DES MOINES, Iowa – The Milwaukee tennis team won the doubles point, but were unable to hold down the Drake Bulldogs in singles play, falling by a score of 4-1 Saturday afternoon from the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
Despite great play in doubles, the Panthers (4-4) were held in check in singles play while the Bulldogs (3-4) won the first four matches to win the match.
"The team put together another great doubles performance today, probably our best of the year on lines two and three, and one did a great job of hanging in there and scrapping to stay alive in the match," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. In singles, we won first sets on four, five and six and had a few chances to split on one and two, so the match could have turned out much differently if we had taken advantage of more of our opportunities. We have to be resilient and jump back in to the fight tomorrow."
In doubles, the Panthers dropped just four games in lines two and three combined to win the point.
Mayya Perova,
Anika Tylek finished first winning 6-2 over Carmen Palumbo and Daria Walczak, while
Anna Daniel Fuentes and
Agata Jurczak replicated the same results beating Drake's Kelsey Neville and Maria Tatarnikova.
The Bulldogs cleared the slate in singles and jumped out to a 3-1 advantage after winning the first three matches in straight sets.
Lucy Harper,
Anika Tylek and
Anna Daniel Fuentes each won their first set of their respective matches, but couldn't quite close it out when DU's Carmen Palumbo clinched the match from line four, beating Daniel Fuentes 5-7, 6-1, 6-3.
The Panthers look to bounce back Sunday as they take on Northern Iowa in Waterloo from the Black Hawk Tennis Club. The match is slated for a 12 p.m. start time.
