MKE Hosts Marquette For Annual Tierney Classic

Panthers square off against cross-town rival Marquette

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee track and field team returns home to host cross-town rival Marquette in a battle for Milwaukee at the seventh annual Tierney Classic on Saturday, Jan. 18. Competition gets underway at 10 a.m. from the Klotsche Center.

TIERNEY CLASSIC
Saturday marks the seventh running of the annual Tierney Classic, named in honor of former beloved Milwaukee head track and field and cross country coach John Tierney, who helped the program to countless titles from 1942 to 1974.

As part of this year's classic, Milwaukee welcomes back a host of Panther alumni and their families for an exciting experience in the cross-town showdown against Marquette.

This will be the first of two meets for MKE on its home track this season.

SCOUTING THE GOLDEN EAGLES
For the second year in a row, Milwaukee and Marquette will battle it out for the city of Milwaukee. The Panthers and Golden Eagles have featured a number of memorable competitions over the years but have only had two head-to-head meetings in program history.

The Milwaukee men lead the all-time series over Marquette, 2-0, while on the women's side, the Golden Eagles lead the series 2-0 over the Panthers.

In last season's Tierney Classic, the two teams split the meet. MKE men won 76-69 while the Marquette women took the win 80-70 over MKE.

The first true meeting of the two teams was back in April of 2015. The result again was a split with the MKE men claiming a 104-79 win and the women dropping the meet 104-84.

TOPPING THE CHARTS
In the opening weekend of indoor season, two Panthers topped the charts. Senior Ashley Melvin tied the 17-year-old high jump school record at 1.71m while Alex Cotter won the mile with a time of 4:13.18. The two seniors were also named the Horizon League athletes of the week for their outstanding performances in the opening weekend.

MAKING HISTORY IN COLLEGIATE DEBUTS
Redshirt freshman Austin Wallace and freshman Michael Gorman made history in their collegiate debuts as both cracked into the Panther All-Time Top-10 list. Wallace soared to a mark of 7.23m in long jump, which is now the third best mark in program history while Gorman sprinted to a time of 7.02 in the 60m dash to tie the seventh fastest time in program history.

NEXT ON THE BLOCKS
The Panthers will be back on the road for the two-day Illini Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25, in Urbana-Champaign, Ill. hosted by Illinois.
