Weekend Sweep: Panthers Take Down Raiders, 4-3

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team wrapped up a successful weekend with a 4-3 victory over Wright State Sunday from River Glen Elite ending the weekend with a sweep.

The Panthers (11-8, 4-2) endured another tight match that came down to the wire, and once again the team prevailed defeating conference foe, Wright State (12-12, 3-2).

"Fortunately I have been saying this a lot in the past few weeks, but there's no other way to say it other than it was another great team win," said head coach Jason Potthoff. "It was really a great weekend for the girls and for our program, and I am extremely proud of them."

MKE earned the doubles point over Wright State with wins from Nicole Clarke and Mayya Perova (6-2) at the No. 1 position, and also from Alexandra Belle and Anna Daniel Fuentes (6-3). Earning the point proved to be the difference maker for the team.

"We came out of the games with tremendous intensity in doubles and that proved to be the difference in the final score again," Potthoff said.

In singles, Belle and Daniel Fuentes took care of business from the No. 1 and No. 6 lines defeating their Raider opponent 7-5, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-2 to get off the courts early and put pressure on the Raiders.

"Anna getting off the court with a singles win quickly helped us to apply some scoreboard pressure early again, just like yesterday," said Potthoff. "Then Alex followed up with a solid match against a tricky opponent to get us to three points."

Tied at three, it came down to two freshmen, Mayya Perova and Nikki Milner to clinch the match for the Panthers. Milner, who clinched the match versus Northern Kentucky Saturday, finished first, falling just short in a battle with Jilliian Milano, 6-4, 7-6 (3-0). Meanwhile, down a set, Perova battled back the next two sets winning 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 to win the match for the Panthers.

"Mayya Perova fought off match points and got two huge breaks of serve when she had to have them to keep us alive, and she played a virtually flawless tiebreak to close out the match," Potthoff said.

Milwaukee will look to continue its hot streak on the road as the team travels to IUPUI April 13 and UIC April 14. The team will then wrap up the regular season with a trip to Green Bay Saturday, April 20.
