MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Alexandra Belle and the Milwaukee tennis team served up a 4-3 win Saturday afternoon over Northern Kentucky from River Glen Elite.
Once again, Milwaukee's
Nikki Milner came up clutch in singles play. After falling in the first set 0-6 to Katja Dijanezevic, Milner battled through and won the next two sets 6-4, 7-5 to clinch the win for the Panthers.
The Panthers (10-8, 3-2) jumped out in front winning the doubles point thanks to two quick matches from the No. 1 and 2 doubles teams. Between the two matches, the Panthers allowed just three wins for the NKU (5-9, 1-3).
Nicole Clarke and
Mayya Perova defeated Margita Sunjic and Taylor Culbertson 6-1, while
Alexandra Belle and
Anna Daniel Fuentes defeated Maria Koo and Elizabeth Rozin 6-2 for the point.
"It was another great team win for us, and it was inspiring to see the team fight for a 4-3 victory on Alex's Senior Day," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "We played amazing doubles again, and it obviously paid off to get up 1-0 from the start."
In singles,
Anna Daniel Fuentes was the first to finish for the Panthers earning a 6-3, 6-1 win over Hannah Watton from the No. 6 position, while junior
Nicole Clarke picked up the second singles win over Elizabeth Rozin, 6-3, 6-4 respectively.
"Anna and Nicole getting off their courts with decisive victories helped us to apply some scoreboard pressure to NKU, but to their credit they pushed us to the very end," said Potthoff.
And to the end it came down to. With the match all square, the decisive point was to be decided by the No. 5 line between Milner and Dijanezevic. Down a set, Milner rebounded 6-4, 7-5 to win the match, respectively.
Milwaukee will have its final home match of the regular season against Wright State Sunday afternoon. The Panthers and Raiders will begin play at 1 p.m. from River Glen Elite.
