MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team have just five more regular season matches this 2019 season, and will host Northern Kentucky and Wright State for a final regular-season homestand beginning with NKU Saturday, April 6 and WSU the following day. Saturday will serve as Senior Day, and both matches will begin at 1 p.m. from River Glen Elite.
The Panthers enter a pivotal weekend against the Norse and Raiders, with all three teams sitting in the middle of the pack in league standings, and fighting for a spot to the conference tournament.
BRIEF RECAP: In Michigan, the Panthers split matches defeating Detroit Mercy, 4-3, Saturday (March 30) and fell to Oakland, 2-5, Sunday (March 31).
Freshman
Nikki Milner clinched the match for Milwaukee against Detroit Mercy, having come back two-straight sets after dropping the first.
Mayya Perova was the only Panther to go 2-0 in singles over the weekend, and improved her win total to 10 on the season.
ABOUT THE NORSE: NKU returns two-time Horizon League Player of the Year, Margita Sunjic who accumulated 27 wins in her first two years at Northern Kentucky, including a 14-3, 8-1 mark a season ago. The junior is 8-4, 2-1 in singles play so far this season, and 5-6 in doubles.
The team also highlights sophomore, Maria Koo who was named to the league's Second Team as a freshman. Koo went 10-8, 7-2 from the No. 2 singles spot, and is currently 8-4, 3-0.
As a team, the Norse are 5-8, 1-2 , and sit right behind the Panthers in league standings at sixth.
ABOUT THE RAIDERS: Wright State are currently 11-11, 2-1 and just a head of Milwaukee in fourth place.
The Raiders are led by Haily Morgan, Luisa Pelayo and Madison Riley in singles, and the three have combined by 32 wins in singles. Riley leads all with a 13-8 record, playing primarily from the No. 4 position.
In doubles, Hailey Morgan and Madison Riley team up as the No. 1 doubles team and are 12-6, 2-1. Luisa Pelayo and Grace Whitney also have an impressive record as the No. 2 doubles team with a 10-4, 2-1 record.
AWARDS, AWARDS, AWARDS: The Panthers took home HL honors in the first two weeks of competitive play, and recently for the week of Feb. 25.
Junior
Nicole Clarke grabbed her second honor of the season for Singles Player of Week on Feb. 26. Clarke notably moved up from the No. 3-4 positions to now the No. 2 position in the single's lineup and went 2-0 from the No. 2 spot on Feb. 23-24.
Belle earned Singles Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 22, and the Panthers swept the awards for the week of Jan. 28 with
Nicole Clarke grabbing Singles Player of the Week and Belle/Perova earning Doubles Team of the Week.
