WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – In the 2019 Horizon League Women's Tennis Championship, the No. 4 seed Milwaukee tennis team faced No. 5 Wright State in the Quarterfinals and came up short against the Raiders falling by a score of 4-2. The match took place outdoors at the Schwartz Tennis Center.
The Panthers have been dominate in doubles, especially in the latter half of the season, but were unable to take an early 1-0 advantage losing the first two matches 6-1 and 6-2.
"I knew that today was going to be a battle, and that doubles was going to be crucial in order to get to four point," said Panther head coach
Jason Potthoff. "We didn't serve well early on and gave away a few too many free points and you can't do that against a team as good as Wright State. Credit to Nikki (Milner) and Agata (Jurczak) at No. 3 doubles, who were a couple points away from winning their match, and ended the season playing really well together."
In singles, the Panthers got off to a quick start with wins coming from
Alexandra Belle and
Anna Daniel Fuentes. Belle took down Andreea Craciun 6-0, 6-3 from the No. 1 line, while Daniel Fuentes defeated Grace Whitney, 6-3, 6-3.
Wright State, however, got key wins from lines three-five to earn the victory. 2019 Freshman of the Year,
Mayya Perova's match remained unfinished at 4-6, 4-4.
"Similarly to our regular season match against WSU, we got singles wins from Alex and Anna, and Mayya had grabbed all the momentum on line No. 2 and had her eye on another three set win there," said Potthoff. "I think if we had won the doubles today, we would be plaing in the Semifinals tomorrow, but Wright State had a good game plan and executed well on a lot of deuce points. It always hurts when the season is over, but that's because we all put so much into it and I am so proud of this team and all the things they accomplished this year."
Milwaukee wraps up the 2019 season 13-10 and a 6-3 Horizon League record, and a bid to the league tournament. In addition to the team accomplishments this season, Belle was named to the league's First Team while Perova was named Freshman of the Year.
