SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The Milwaukee tennis team picked up another Horizon League win defeating Detroit Mercy, 4-3 Saturday evening from the Franklin Athletic Club.
Milwaukee (9-7, 2-1) went toe-to-toe with the Titans (7-8, 0-3) throughout the entire match but it was the Panthers who prevailed in the end.
"I am extremely proud of how the team fought today," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "We did what we needed to do to get another conference win, and are excited to for the opportunity and challenge of taking on Oakland tomorrow."
The Panthers jumped out to 1-0 lead taking the doubles point when the team won at lines one and two. Paired up at No. 1,
Nicole Clarke and
Mayya Perova finished first with a dominate 6-1 win over the Titans No. 1 duo.
Alexandra Belle and
Anna Daniel Fuentes capped off the point when they won their match, 6-4.
It was a tight race throughout singles play, but it was Milwaukee who prevailed in the end when freshman
Nikki Milner clinched the win for the Panthers defeated Sophie Torcelle 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
"We saw an incredible match from Nikke tonight – fighting back to dominate the second and third sets to clinch it," Potthoff said. "The fight from everyone was fun to watch."
Picking up from where they did in doubles, Clarke and Perova also won their singles match. Both Clarke and Perova defeated their Titan opponent in straight sets with Clarke winning 6-3, 6-4 and Perova 6-3, 6-3.
Milwaukee will wrap up its road trip through Michigan Sunday with another evening match against the Oakland Golden Grizzlies. The match is slated for a 4:30 p.m. (CT) start at Bloomfield Tennis.
