Tennis Look to Keep it Rolling with a Trip to Michigan this Weekend

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team return to action with a weekend on the road to Michigan to compete against Detroit Mercy and Oakland on Saturday, March 30 at 5 p.m. (CT) and Sunday, March 31 at 4:30 p.m. (CT).
 
BRIEF RECAP: The Panthers opened Horizon League play a weekend ago, and split the weekend with Cleveland State and Youngstown State. Milwaukee suffered a 6-1 defeat versus CSU, but bounced back the next day defeating five-time tournament champions Youngstown State, 5-2.
 
ABOUT THE TITANS: Detroit Mercy opened league play with UIC and IUPUI, and lost both matches. The Titans are now 7-7, 0-2 on the season.
 
The team is led by sophomore Jasmine Apawti and senior Iris Thioux. Both Apawti and Thious are tied for a team high 13 wins, while Apawti is 8-5 from the No. 1 position and Thioux 9-5 from the No. 2 spot. The two also compete together as the No. 1 doubles team and are 9-11 on the season.
 
ABOUT THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES: Similar to MKE, Oakland split the weekend having defeated IUPUI 5-2 Saturday and falling to UIC 6-1 the next day. With the split, Oakland is 7-7, 1-1 so far this season.
 
Sophomore Avan Thielman lead the Golden Grizzlies with a 10-4 overall record, and is 7-3 in her last ten matches, including a five-match win streak.
 
From doubles, Thielman and Darya Maltseva combine for an 8-5 record, all from the No. 1 spot in the lineup, and are currently on a three-match win streak. Right behind them, duo Sam Galloway and Sofia Borcuti sit at 7-3 and have primarily competed from the No. 3 line.
 
AWARDS, AWARDS, AWARDS: The Panthers took home HL honors in the first two weeks of competitive play, and recently for the week of Feb. 25.
 
Junior Nicole Clarke grabbed her second honor of the season for Singles Player of Week on Feb. 26. Clarke notably moved up from the No. 3-4 positions to now the No. 2 position in the single's lineup and went 2-0 from the No. 2 spot on Feb. 23-24.
 
Belle earned Singles Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 22, and the Panthers swept the awards for the week of Jan. 28 with Nicole Clarke grabbing Singles Player of the Week and Belle/Perova earning Doubles Team of the Week.

NEXT UP: Milwaukee return home next weekend, April 6-7 hosting Northern Kentucky Saturday and Wright State Sunday. Sunday's match versus Wright State will also serve as Senior Day and celebrate MKE's lone senior, Alexandra Belle and her career. Both matches are set to begin at 1 p.m. from River Glen Elite.
