MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Milwaukee tennis team took down five-time, defending Horizon League Tournament Champions Youngstown State Sunday afternoon by a score of 5-2 from River Glen Elite.
Sunday's 5-2 win over Youngstown State (4-13, 1-1) marks the first time in five years that the Panthers (8-7, 1-1) have defeated the Penguins.
"It was another incredible day of fighting and competing by the Panthers," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "I told the team after last night's match that our team has developed to the point where we are going to be in a battle with the top teams in the conference, and we have to embrace the challenge."
After a tough loss yesterday against Cleveland State, the Panthers stepped up their game and came away with victory by way of five single match wins.
"We left the doubles point out there again today, and probably should have started out with a 1-0 lead, but every singles match was so well-played and hard-fought that we earned this one as a team," said Potthoff.
In singles, both
Nicole Clarke and
Mayya Perova dropped their first sets, but came back and took the next two to come away the win. Clarke defeated Tamara Teufl 4-6, 6-2 6-3 and is 5-2 since moving to the No. 2 position in the lineup.
Senior
Alexandra Belle also fell behind in the first set after losing 4-6, but fought back in the second winning 6-4, and took the tiebreaker 10-8 to win the match.
Agata Jurczak and
Anna Daniel Fuentes wrapped up the match sweeping Cassandra Moraleja and Claudia Barboza 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-3, respectively.
Next up, Milwaukee will hit the road traveling to Detroit Mercy and Oakland to continue league play. The Panthers and Titans are set to begin at 5 p.m. (CT) Saturday, March 30, and follow-up with the Golden Grizzlies at 4:30 p.m. (CT) the next day.
