MILWWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team entered the match on a five-match win streak but Cleveland State snapped the streak defeating the Panthers Saturday by a score of 6-1 this Saturday afternoon from River Glen Elite.
The Panthers competed through and through in its first Horizon League match – despite what the final results came out to be.
"I have nothing but great things to say about our effort and competitiveness today," said head coach
Jason Potthoff." "I give credit to Cleveland State because they competed just as hard as we did and they won a lot of game-deciding points."
Alexandra Belle and
Anna Daniel Fuentes got the ball rolling in doubles from line two defeating Lara Prosenjak and Kateryna Avram 6-3, but the Panthers came up shy of earning the doubles point falling 7-5 and 6-3 in the other matches.
Sophomore
Agata Jurczak went to three sets in her match, but came out on top defeating Sian Payne 6-0, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5. Jurzak's win accounted for the lone Panther point in the match.
The Panthers played tough and had opportunities to come away with the win in lines one through three, but came up short in the end. Each of the top three lines either went three sets or a tie-break second set.
"We played extremely tough matches on lines one through four singles, and had our chances to win all four on those courts," said Potthoff. "But I am very pleased with our overall effort on the courts today."
Milwaukee returns to action Sunday afternoon to host defending Horizon League Champions Youngstown State. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m. (CT) from River Glen Elite.
