MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team look to extend its two-match winning streak Sunday as the team hosts the North Dakota Fighting Hawks Sunday from River Glen Elite. Match time is set for 12 p.m. (CT).
Milwaukee has just three more non-conference duals before league play begins March 23 against Cleveland State. The Panthers only have one match this week against North Dakota and wrap up non-conference play against Northern Iowa and UW-Whitewater next weekend.
LAST TIME OUT: Last weekend, the Panthers went 2-0 defeating Cardinal Stritch and Dayton. MKE began the weekend with a 6-1 win over five-time defending Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) Cardinal Stritch Saturday (Feb. 23). A Sunday matinee followed when the team edged out the Dayton Flyers, 4-3.
In singles play,
Alexandra Belle,
Nicole Clarke,
Mayya Perova and
Anna Daniel Fuentes all went 2-0.
Meanwhile in doubles, No. 1 doubles team Belle and Perova extended their undefeated streak by going 2-0, improving their record together to 10-0.
ABOUT THE FIGHTING HAWKS: UND is currently 4-5 on the season with wins over Bemidji State, Northern Illinois and Gustavus Adolphus. The program finished 7-12 (4-7 Big Sky). This year, UND transitions over to The Summit League. All competing teams with the exception of hockey and football will now be part of The Summit.
The Fighting Hawks are led by senior Zahra Finnigan. Finnigan posted an 11-8 singles record from the No. 4-6 positions. In doubles play, she went 5-10.
Senior Preethi Kasilingam also returns with experience posting a 10-9 record from 2017-18. In doubles she went 9-9.
Head Cocah Tom Wynne is in his 28
th year as UND's head coach. Wynne coaches both the men's and women's teams and was inducted to the University of North Dakota Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.
AWARDS, AWARDS, AWARDS: The Panthers took home HL honors in the first two weeks of competitive play, and recently for the week of Feb. 25.
Junior
Nicole Clarke grabbed her second honor of the season for Singles Player of Week. Clarke notably moved up from the No. 3-4 positions to now the No. 2 position in the single's lineup and went 2-0 from the No. 2 spot last weekend.
Belle earned Singles Player of the Week for the week of Jan. 22, and the Panthers swept the awards for the week of Jan. 28 with
Nicole Clarke grabbing Singles Player of the Week and Belle/Perova earning Doubles Team of the Week.
WHO'S NEXT: MKE will have a split weekend next weekend when the team hosts Northern Iowa Friday, March 8 from River Glen Elite at 1 p.m. Then on Saturday, the team will travel to UW-Whitewater to wrap up its non-conference schedule. Match time at the Lake Geneva Tennis Club is set for 5 p.m.
