MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Match wins in singles play once again led the Milwaukee tennis team to a 4-3 victory on over the Dayton Flyers Sunday from River Glen Elite.
After losing the doubles point, Milwaukee (4-6) came back through singles to defeat Dayton (2-6). Senior
Alexandra Belle notched the W for the team when she defeated Mattea Kilstofte 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 at line No. 1.
"The takeaway from this weekend is that we're finally realizing how important it is not to panic if we don't have our best tennis that day," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "We're struggling a bit at lines two and three doubles, but to come through and win the match with our singles in both contests this weekend was really good to see – it's a testament to the fight that this team has inside of them."
Picking up the other single's wins were
Nicole Clarke,
Mayya Perova and
Anna Daniel Fuentes for the Panthers. All three defeated their Flyer opponent in straight sets.
Clarke cleaned up in No. 2 defeating Emily Zargham 6-3, 6-1, while
Anna Daniel Fuentes at No. 6 had similar results winning 6-1, 6-4. MKE's Perova went to a tiebreaker in the second set after winning 6-0, but outlasted Kelly Pleiman 7-6 (4) in the tiebreaker for the win.
In doubles, Belle and Perova hit the double-digit mark in wins when they defeated Mattea Kilstofte and Natalie Allen at line No. 1, 6-3. The Belle/Perova duo now move to a perfect 10-0 on the season.
The Panthers will have a lighter schedule next weekend with just the one match versus North Dakota on Sunday, March 3. The dual will be played at River Glen Elite and begin at 12 p.m.
