MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Tennis duo
Alexandra Belle and
Mayya Perova added another W to their double's record together Friday, but the Milwaukee tennis team dropped a 4-0 decision to Drake from the Helfaer Tennis Stadium at Marquette.
Belle and Perova have been on fire since the beginning of the competitive season and have shown no signs of slowing down. Friday, the duo improved their record to 7-0 defeating Drake's No. 1 doubles team Liza Petushova and Kenya Williams, 6-0. Before Friday's match, Petsukova and Williams entered the match at 4-2 together.
From there, the Panthers struggled to put together a full match and close out key matchups.
"When you play against a team as good as Drake and you win 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, you need to be able to close it out when you're up 5-2 at No. 3 doubles," said head coach
Jason Potthoff. "We didn't do that and it gave the Bulldogs some breathing room going into singles."
In singles, matches one, three and four ended quickly in favor of the Bulldogs leaving the courts two, five and six unfinished as the Bulldogs won the three matches in singles they needed to win the match.
"We had three courts where we had double-break leads in singles and only got one of them, and that's not enough when you're up against a good team," said Potthoff.
MKE struggled to get anything going, and the three matches that were completed, the Panthers fell in straight sets.
Sophomore
Agata Jurczak was in the third set tiebreaker for the match after taking the first set 6-0, but the match remained unfinished when Drake won the three matches they needed to win.
"We are playing some good tennis right now and we're getting a lot of opportunities, so we just need to work on being a little more brave when it's time to execute at the end of games and sets," Potthoff said.
Milwaukee return to action Saturday (Feb. 16) to take on the Eastern Illionis Panthers. The dual will be played at River Glen Elite with the first serve set for 1 p.m.
