MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Dominant singles play earned the Milwaukee tennis team its first conference win Sunday over Detroit Mercy by a score of 4-3 at River Glen Elite.
Milwaukee (5-13, 1-2) came up short in doubles play against Detroit Mercy (7-12, 2-2), but came up big in singles winning 4-of-6 matches to secure their first conference win.
"We made it a lot harder on ourselves by not taking advantage of a lot of opportunities in doubles, but I am very proud of how we battled in singles and came away with the four singles wins that we needed," said head coach
Jason Potthoff.
After the Titans took the doubles point, the Panthers had their work cut out for them in singles, but the team stayed poised and resilient against a tough Titan lineup.
Resilient as they come, freshman
Agata Jurczak had a showdown with Titan's Pauline Van Herck in what was a three set match. Jurczak won the first set 6-3, but the tables were turned in the second as she lost 3-6, forcing a third set. It looked as if Van Herck was about to win the match up 2-5, but Jurzak came back to win five straight sets and pull off the comeback.
"Agata showed a lot of character against an opponent who is very tricky to play, and her comeback from down 2-5 in the third set was one of the greatest things I've seen on a tennis court," said Potthoff. "It was a really great moment for her."
Anna Daniel Fuentes and
Nicole Clarke both had impressive outings as well defeating their opponents in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3 and 6-2, 6-3 securing the Panthers win.
The Panthers hit the road next weekend with matches against Wright State and Northern Kentucky. UWM will take on Wright State Sat., April 7 and Northern Kentucky the following day.
