MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team extends its winning match streak to three this Friday afternoon in its 5-2 win over cross-city foe Cardinal Stritch at River Glen Elite.
With the win, Milwaukee improves to 3-8 on the season while NAIA opponent, Cardinal Stritch drop to 3-4.
The Panthers got off on the right foot by winning the doubles points taking the first two matches. Panthers' No. 1 doubles team
Labina Petrovska and
Anna Daniel Fuentes dominated Assya Trimari and Chelsea Kelly in a 6-0 sweep, while
Agata Jurczak and
Loren Nelson also won in convincing fashion, 6-2.
In addition to the team's win streak, senior
Labina Petrovska has amassed a win streak of her own. Petrovska went a perfect 4-0 over SDSU and Chicago State last weekend, and continued her roll defeating her opponent this afternoon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Carrying their momentum from doubles, UWM won in straight sets at No. 2, 4 and 6 singles. "Having Loren, Nicole and then Labina take charge, allowed us to clinch early and get off the court quickly, and it was just what we needed today," said Head Coach
Jason Potthoff.
Returning at full strength, freshman
Loren Nelson commanded her first set 6-0, and took the second 6-3 over Antonia Elze at No. 2 singles.
Doubles play did not result favorably for Panthers'
Nicole Clarke and
Lucy Harper, but the duo rebounded in singles play. Clarke won in straight sets 6-4, 6-1, while Harper won 7-6 (5), 6-4.
"I was very pleased with our energy and execution in doubles, especially at No. 1 and No. 2," Potthoff said. "All six Panthers fought hard today, and we are ready to get back out there tomorrow."
The Panthers look to continue to swing the hot racket tomorrow as Milwaukee will take an in-town trip to Marquette. The match is set to begin at 12 p.m. at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
