MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The Milwaukee tennis team picked up a big win over Chicago State in late action Sunday, winning 4-3 from River Glen Elite in Milwaukee.
The Panthers (2-8) collected it's second win of the season in as many days in what was a close match against the Cougars (3-9).
In doubles play, No. 1
Labina Petrovska and
Anna Daniel Fuentes took down Iesha Shepherd and Mariya Kostyuk 6-4, accounting the lone win in doubles.
Knowing they were down points after doubles play, Milwaukee took the bull by the horns and turned their play around. "I wasn't very pleased with the way we carried ourselves at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, so I challenged the team to show me that they were committed to fighting the rest of the match," noted head coach
Jason Potthoff.
After doubles play and a pep talk from Coach Potthoff, the Panthers responded in a big way.
Petrovska continued with the hot hand into singles play, sweeping her opponent 6-4, 6-4.
Following Petrovska's win, the Panthers' won the next two matches. No. 4
Nicole Clarke took down Iesha Shepherd 6-3, 6-2, and
Lucy Harper won 6-3, 6-4.
The last two matches came down to the wire, but the Panthers clinched with
Agata Jurczak's big win in a three-set match. Jurczak went toe-to-toe with Courgar's Katarina Drazic, and won in the end 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
"We took another step forward as a team today," Potthoff said. "The team responded in a big way, and it was amazing to see the way they battled in singles. We are still learning and growing, and right now I know they are hungry to keep moving forward as a team."
Up next, Milwaukee will take on two cross-city foe's next weekend. The Panthers will host Cardinal Stritch on Friday March 2 and follow-up with Marquette the next day.
