Milwaukee Resets Record Book At GVSU

DMR, Andrew lead big day for UWM

ALLENDALE, Mich.Peter Andrew and the distance medley relay squad both took down long-standing school records to headline an impressive second day of action for the Milwaukee men's track and field team at the GVSU Big Meet Saturday from the Kelly Family Sports Center.

All told, the Panthers racked up 17 top-10 finishes on the day in another dominating performance from Grand Valley State.

"These results are what we were looking for," Milwaukee head coach Pete Corfeld said. "The team came through big time this weekend. The tone was set on Friday and carried through today. Hats off to the athletes and the staff. Through and through a great competition for the Panthers."

Andrew set the tone right out of the gates with a win in shot put, setting a new school record along the way. The reigning Horizon League Field Athlete of the Week – who has been steadily climbing the rankings all season long – broke through with a PR toss of 17.19m (56-4 ¾) to surpass Jon Manke's previous record of 17.18m set back in 2000. Andrew's mark extends his lead over the rest of the conference and moves him into 85th in the nation so far this season.

Freshman Jake Wendt also turned in a PR-mark of 16.02m (52-6 ¾) to take fifth on the day and shot him up into eighth place in school history. Silas Petrie also did well, taking 10th overall at 14.33m (47-0 ¼).

Petrie also turned in a new career best in weight throw with an impressive mark of 17.53m (57-6 ¼), now ranking him third in program history and second in the conference standings. Jamar Manning – who leads the league thus far – came in fifth on the day with a solid throw of 16.90m (55-5 ½). Miles Kilpin also did well, just missing his PR at 16.08m (52-9 ¼).

Record number two of the day fell when Milwaukee's DMR team took to the track. Alex Cotter, Kyle Becker, Drew Dueck and Terry McMillan combined for a final time of 9:55.12 in the relay – blowing by the previous record of 9:58.58 set back in 2006. McMillan's unofficial anchor time of 4 minutes, 9 seconds helped put the team over the edge for the 30th-fastest distance medley relay in the nation this year.

"Everyone ran outstanding legs, but you have to have a great split in the mile (the final leg) and Terry provided a best ever in program history," Corfeld said. "Hats off to the crew. They set a goal and achieved it. There's nothing more satisfying than that."

Brady Irwin continued to improve, clearing a season-best height of 2.00m (6-6 ¾) in high jump for third out of 20 on the day and now second in the conference standings.

Freshman Cole Gillitzer continued Milwaukee's strong showing in jumps by taking fourth in triple jump with a PR leap of 12.89m (42-3 ½). In long jump, junior Scott Hietpas continued to impress with a solid mark of 6.54m (21-5 ½) for seventh, with Bryce McMurtry taking 10th at 6.38m (20-11 ¼).

Nick Stugelmeyer turned in a PR of 7.08 in the 60m prelims to advance to the afternoon finals, where he one-upped that performance in 7.07 to take sixth on the day in finals.

Milwaukee's 4x400m relay crew of Becker, Ryan Vinhal, Konner Fierek and McMurtry finished third on the day out of the deep field with a time of 3:23.36.

In other notable finishes, Michael Sippy took eighth in the 800m in 1:55.69, Vinhal finished 10th in the 400m with a time of 50.05, Corey Thornton took 11th in the 3000m with a PR time of 8:49.84 and Weston Guilfoyle came in 11th in the 200m in a season-best time of 22.58.

The Panthers now return to campus for their second and final home meet next weekend with the annual Panther Tune-Up scheduled to start at 10am next Saturday.
