Panthers Fight But Come Up Short In Opener

Milwaukee kept it close in all of its matches on the day

MILWAUKEE – The Milwaukee women's tennis team kicked off its 2016 season with a 7-0 loss Saturday morning to Marquette from the Helfaer Tennis Center.

The score was a deceiving one for UWM, as the Panthers were more than competitive in all of their matches but just came up short in the first action of the season.

"I'm very proud of how my team played today," Milwaukee head coach Jeff Aranda said. "The ladies were great all day long. It was an extremely competitive from top to bottom."

That day started with doubles action as Laurie Clark and Alysa Straub fought hard at the No. 1 spot. The freshman and junior duo gave Marquette's top tandem everything they could before falling, 6-3.

In singles play, newcomer Labina Petrovska battled with Silvia Ambrosio at the top spot. It was back and forth in the first set, with Ambrosio taking the early lead and using that momentum to take the win, 6-4, 6-0, 0-3.

Hayley Marshall just missed the big win at the No. 2 spot. The junior forced extras in both sets, coming up just short, 7-5, 7-5.

Milwaukee was incredibly competitive in all nine of its singles and doubles matches on the day despite the loss.

The Panthers return to action next weekend with a trip to Minneapolis. Milwaukee will take on host Minnesota Saturday before a Sunday neutral-site contest against South Dakota.
