Milwaukee Tennis Can’t Slow Down Penguins

Panthers fall 6-1

MILWAUKEE – The Youngstown State University women's tennis team improved to 5-0 in Horizon League play with a 6-1 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday morning at North Shore River Glen.

The Panthers put up a solid fight, forcing extras in two singles matches before coming up just short.

"We knew going into the match Youngstown was going to be a really strong competitor," Panther head coach Maddy Soule said. "Although we lost today, I believe it was different than other losses because we were simply beaten by the better team. The way they were playing, they were going to be tough to beat. They came out strong and determined and everyone fought and lost respectable matches."

After dropping the doubles point, Milwaukee stayed tough. Senior Christina Colarossi cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win in singles action to give the Panthers some confidence.

Sophomore Alysa Straub and freshman Mardee Merar both battled hard in their matchups. Straub had the closest match of the day, coming up just short, 7-6, 6-7, 10-8. Merar also put up a valiant effort in a 6-4, 3-6, 9-11 loss at the No. 6 spot.

"Christina, our senior who has proven her willingness to grind through matches time and time again, had a great win and is really demonstrating her experience and leadership in all these matches," Soule said. "We have another tough match tomorrow and the girls are welcoming the competition with confidence and excitement to look to improve our conference record."

UWM is right back at it Sunday with an 11 a.m. contest against Cleveland State.
