Tennis Battles Back For Big Win

Straub battles illness to seal the comeback

Rochester, Mich.
– Sophomore Alysa Straub battled illness while battling for a deciding three-set win to seal a 4-3 comeback win for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team at the Bloomfield Hills Tennis and Fitness Club Saturday.

The Panthers dropped the opening doubles point before fighting hard and claiming four of the six singles points for the comeback win.

With the win, UWM now improves to 2-0 in league play – tied for the league lead.

"When we lost the doubles point I knew we would have to fight to find four wins," Milwaukee head coach Maddy Soule said. "Oakland fought hard, but we were able to find four singles matches. I am very proud of the girls for pulling this match out, though it was a little close for comfort. I am especially proud of Alysa Straub, winning the clinching match while having to take sickness breaks throughout. Though she wasn't feeling well, she knew she was the deciding match and did everything she could to fight through."

Straub started the day teaming up with senior captain Christina Colarossi to take the No. 1 doubles spot in a convincing 6-3 win. Oakland was able to take the next two doubles points, however, to claim the early lead.

The Panthers never quit though.

Senior Chelsea Bailey started Milwaukee off strong in singles play. She made quick work of Cam Sabourin at the No. 1 spot, winning 6-1, 6-4.

UWM built off that early result. Colarossi breezed to a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 5 spot, while Hayley Marshall fought hard for a 7-5, 6-3 win over Karine Celis at the No. 2 spot.

Then, in the deciding match, Straub did all she could despite dealing with an illness. The sophomore dropped the first point only to claim a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win to clinch the win for Milwaukee.

The Panthers are right back at it Sunday, taking on a Detroit squad that is 9-7 overall and 1-0 in league play after sweeping Green Bay Saturday.
