Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team collected four more wins in the final day of action at the Gopher Invitational at the Baseline Tennis Center Sunday.
"The weekend went well," Milwaukee head coach
Maddy Soule said. "The team is get better with each match and I feel like we will be amply prepared for conference season next semester. I'm looking forward to our next invite and seeing the girl's hard work pay off."
Senior
Christina Colarossi put forward a dominating performance to start things off for Milwaukee. Playing in the third-place showing of the Minneapolis flight, Colarossi took down Sophie Allen-Fisher, 6-3, 6-0, to get things going early.
Freshman
Mardee Merar continued her quick rise on the weekend. After dropping her first match on Friday, Merar then powered through the rest of the field, including Dragana Brankovic in Sunday's backdraw final. The Panther freshman won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, to finish the weekend 3-1 overall in singles play.
Hayley Marshall finished runner-up in the St. Paul flight. The sophomore fought hard and took Yamini Reddy to three sets before settling for second place.
The Panthers continued to put up strong results in doubles play, as well.
Straub and Colarossi cruised to a, 8-1 win in their first matchup before taking second place, coming up just short in the championship match. That marks the fourth top-three finish for UWM in doubles play on the weekend.
Milwaukee now has a two weeks to prepare for its next tournament, the Warhawk/Panther Invite in Whitewater, Wis. starting Friday, Oct. 3 and going to Saturday, Oct. 4.
