Minneapolis, Minn. -Â The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team had another great showing in the second day of action at the Gopher Invitational at the Baseline Tennis Center.UWM went 8-5 overall on the day, winning yet another doubles title and sitting in prime positions across the board in singles play.
"Everyone played really well today and I am extremely pleased with our results," Milwaukee head coach Maddy Soule said. "Alysa Straub had a big win over Wisconsin's top player. Mardee Merar won both her singles matches today. Hayley Marshall advanced to Sunday's finals and is playing very well.
"All in all, the day went exceptionally well. Everyone fought really hard and carried themselves very well."
Marshall had an outstanding day on the court and will play for an individual title Sunday. Playing in the St. Paul flight, the sophomore fought back after dropping the first set to take down South Dakota's Nina Barudzic.
Straub had one of the biggest wins of the day, taking down Eketerina Stepanova from Wisconsin in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, in the Minnesota flight.
In just her second week of collegiate action, Merar continued her hot start. After winning her first match of the day in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5, Merar nearly mirrored those results in her second match, winning 6-3, 7-6.
Christina Colarossi won her second-straight match in the Minneapolis flight before coming up just short for a chance at the title. But, Colarossi has earned a spot in Sunday's third-place match against North Dakota's Sophie Allen-Fisher.
In doubles action, Straub and Colarossi claimed a third-place finish in one flight. The duo narrowly dropped their opening match against Wisconsin's top draw and then came out strong the next time up with an 8-5 win.
Merar and Marshall also took home a third-place trophy after cruising past the duo from Kentucky, 8-3.
Milwaukee will wrap up the invite Sunday.Â
