Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tennis team won an impressive 14 matches in its opening day of the Warhawk/Panther Invite at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Saturday.
Milwaukee won the top-two doubles titles on the day and won all but one singles match in a dominating showing in just the third tournament of the season.
"Overall, today was a very good day," Milwaukee head coach
Maddy Soule said. "We went 14-2 overall. The weather conditions were incredibly challenging with wind, rain and very cold temperatures. Considering the conditions, I was proud of the team for toughing it out and producing so many wins."
In the top doubles flight,
Alysa Straub and
Christina Colarossi grabbed the first title of the day. The duo fought through two tough matchups in the first two matchups before cruising to an 8-4 win in the championship.
Hayley Marshall and
Mardee Merar cruised to another Milwaukee title in the second flight of doubles action. The underclassmen first took down Green Bay's doubles team, 8-3, in the opening match before an 8-4 win over Whitewater and an 8-4 handling of Grand Valley State's duo.
In the third flight,
Aerielle Pendleton and
Chelsea Bailey cruised through their first two draws before settling for second place in a hard-fought championship match.
The Panthers powered through nearly the whole field in singles play. Playing in the top flight, Straub easily got by Stephanie Londre of Green Bay, 6-0, 6-2.Bailey also won going away in her matchup, 6-1, 6-1.
Also advancing to the semifinals were Colarossi (7-5, 5-7, 10-5), Marshall (6-0, 6-2) and Pendleton (6-0, 6-1) to round out Milwaukee's outstanding day on the court.
The Panthers are right back at it on Saturday as the invite concludes with the final matches of singles play.
