Panthers Kick Off Northern Iowa Invite With 11 Singles Wins

Sept. 27, 2013

WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team went 11-2 in singles play and won two of three doubles matches on the opening day of the Northern Iowa Invitational.

The Panthers are unbeaten in the front draw of six of the tournament's nine flights heading into action Saturday.

Dana Shannon, Alysa Straub, Aerielle Pendleton, Christina Colarossi and Kristin Kurer all went unbeaten in singles play. Colarossi and Kurer also teamed up for one doubles win while Straub and Hayley Marshall won their doubles contest.

"Today was a good day," head coach Greg Cromwell said. "Hayley and Alysa had a big win doubles win over UNI to start the day and Dana and Aerielle dropped a close one to Drake's top team. But both Dana and Aerielle each won two singles matches - Aerielle cruising through hers and Dana battling to two wins in super tiebreakers. Kristin Kurer also saw her first action of the season and won at both singles and doubles. I was very encouraged by a lot of the performances I saw today."

The Panthers have five players scheduled to play in semifinals of their singles flights on Saturday, with Straub and Pendleton each slated for stiff tests against players from Iowa State. The two Milwaukee doubles tandems that won on Friday are also slated for quarterfinal matches.

"The weather is a question mark for tomorrow so we don't really know what the schedule is going to look like, but our goal is to win several flights here," Cromwell said. "I'm happy with our depth and even though we're not at full strength we are more than holding our own.
