MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team built an early lead but could not get over the hump in dropping a 4-3 decision to Cleveland State Saturday at North Shore Elite.
The Panthers (9-8, 2-2 Horizon) won the doubles points and quickly captured a pair of singles contests but could never claim the decisive fourth point.
"We competed hard but we just made too many little mistakes to finish it out," Milwaukee head coach Sean McInerney said. "We were in position to get a big win but Cleveland State is very good and knows how to win. We need to start to find a way to come out on the right end of some of the 4-3 matches. We'll continue to work on getting better and tomorrow's match with Youngstown is another very important one."
In doubles play, Maddy Soule and Christina Colarossi claimed a decisive 8-3 win in the top spot while Kelly Fritz and Dana Shannon pulled out a 9-7 win in the second spot.
Then in singles action, Soule recovered from a slow start to claim a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the top spot while Shannon was dominant in capturing a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the second spot.
But Milwaukee couldn't find an additional win. Chelsea Bailey looked like she might be on the verge of forcing a third set before falling 6-4, 6-4 in the fourth spot. And, Kristin Kurer dropped a hard-fought three-set match in the fifth slot.
Milwaukee wraps up the weekend with a Sunday morning match against Youngstown State.
