CLEVELAND, Ohio - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's tennis team wrapped up its weekend road trip in Ohio with a 6-1 loss to Cleveland State Saturday.

Maddy Soule grabbed Milwaukee's lone point of the day, claiming a straight-set win in the top singles spot.

The loss was the first in the league for the Panthers (10-7, 3-1 Horizon), while Cleveland State (12-7, 4-0) remained perfect in conference play.

"We had some good moments today but could not maintain the level we need to for the entire match," UWM head coach Sean McInerney said. "Cleveland State is a very talented and well-coached team and they made some great adjustments against us. Maddy was outstanding today. She beat an extremely talented player and I really loved seeing her bounce back from her loss at Youngstown yesterday."

The Panthers nearly pulled out the doubles point to start the match. Soule and Christina Colarossi did claim their school-record 21st doubles win of the season in the top spot while Megan Gow and Kelly Fritz dropped a hard-fought 8-5 decision in the second slot.

"I thought in doubles we played solid at one and two and but struggled at third doubles," McInerney said. "Maddy and Christina played very well to set the school record against a very good team. I was really happy with how they attacked today."

Then, in singles action, no one could join Soule in the win column. Kristin Kurer came closest, losing her third set, 12-10.

"In singles I thought we were very composed and aggressive in the first sets but in the second sets we got a little frustrated and mentally could not get it done," McInerney said. "Kristin got off to a rough start but did a great job battling back. She will need to keep playing well for us to have a successful remainder of the season. Now, we have to get back to work Monday because we have a really big weekend coming up. "

That weekend sends the Panthers back on the road for a pair of key contests. Milwaukee plays at Butler Saturday before squaring off with Wright State Sunday.
